Natura, the renowned Brazilian cosmetics company, has been on an impressive journey of growth and innovation. The company’s acquisition of Avon in 2019 for approximately $2 billion marked a significant milestone, expanding its global footprint and reinforcing its commitment to empowerment and sustainability.

Natura offers a wide range of products in the realms of cosmetics, beauty, and hygiene, including skincare, haircare, and body care solutions, all crafted with a focus on natural and ethically sourced ingredients. Their product lines, such as Ekos, Chronos, and Mamãe e Bebê, emphasize the use of Amazonian biodiversity and sustainable practices, showcasing the company's dedication to both environmental stewardship and high-quality personal care. With a strong emphasis on research and development, Natura continues to innovate, creating products that not only enhance beauty but also promote well-being and respect for nature.

Embracing Sustainability and Bioinnovation

DID YOU KOW that Natura's dedication to sustainability is a huge part of its business model? It integrates scientific and technological innovation with sustainable practices. The company invested nearly $69 million in research and development in 2022, with a substantial portion dedicated to business innovation. This approach ensures that around 95% of its products are derived from natural ingredients, primarily sourced from the Amazon rainforest.

It's All About Stewardship

Natura’s dedication to stewardship shines through in its impactful initiatives aimed at preserving the Amazon and supporting its communities. Central to this commitment is the company's collaboration with local indigenous and rural populations. By partnering with these communities, Natura not only fosters the conservation of one of the planet’s most critical ecosystems but also ensures that the benefits are shared equitably.

Natura's work in the Amazon focuses on safeguarding its rich biodiversity. The company’s approach involves sustainable practices that protect a vast array of plant and animal species. This preservation effort is crucial, as the Amazon rainforest plays a vital role in regulating the global climate and supporting a diverse range of life.

Natura’s collaboration with local families is significant, with up to 30% of the company’s annual earnings distributed to approximately 10,000 families. This financial support provides crucial income and economic stability to these communities, empowering them to continue their traditional practices while contributing to conservation efforts.

Through these partnerships, Natura has successfully contributed to the protection of 2 million hectares of rainforest. This achievement underscores the company’s role in combating deforestation and promoting sustainable land management. Natura aims to expand this impact, setting a goal to conserve 3 million hectares by 2030. This ambitious target reflects the company’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and its recognition of the interconnectedness between ecological health and community well-being.

In essence, Natura’s stewardship efforts are a model of how businesses can integrate environmental responsibility with social impact. By investing in both the planet and its people, Natura demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainability that goes beyond traditional corporate practices.

My aunt, Anany Hernandez, has been a part of Natura as a "Transformadora 1," a position she holds with immense pride. Her dedication and love for the company are palpable, and I recently had the pleasure of interviewing her in Spanish about her experiences and passion for Natura. Her insights further underscore how Natura’s values resonate deeply with its employees.

The company's strategic divestments and the integration of Avon in Latin America have streamlined operations and enhanced financial stability. In 2023, Natura’s net revenue reached approximately $5.34 billion, reflecting solid revenue growth and improvements in overall financial stability.
